A special type of chip that takes over some of the workload from a computer’s main chip, the CPU. While the CPU does all the basic processing, the DSP handles the other jobs, such as compressing and expanding speech, music, and video files. As CPUs get more powerful in the future, DSP chips may no longer be needed.
