The way that inexpensive sound cards produce sound. FM synthesis creates unrealistic, tinny sounds by imitating musical instruments. Sound cards that use FM synthesis cost less, but don’t sound as rich as cards using wavetable synthesis. See also WAVETABLE SYNTHESIS.
