Pronounced "jiff." A file format for pictures, photographs, and drawings. GIF files are compressed so that you can send them across telephone lines quickly. GIF is widely used on electronic bulletin boards and the Internet. GIF files are limited to 256 colors, so they cannot be used for high-end desktop publishing.
