A type of memory chip that does not lose information, even when the power is turned off. Once data is programmed into the ROM chip, its contents cannot be altered. For example, ROM BIOS chips are used to store information for starting up your computer. ROM chips are also used to store programs for hand-held computers. See also BIOS.
